Surf Lessons on Kauai: Kalapaki or Poipu?
4 min read
Our Kauai selection has two group surf lessons, and the choice is mostly geography. The Kalapaki Beach lesson with Kauai Beach Boys starts near Lihue and costs €92.32, with 4.8 from 37 reviews. The Poipu group surfing lesson starts in Poipu on the south shore and costs €82.99. Both last 1.5 hours and both cap the group, so the rules that matter are the swimming requirement, the age limit and the weight limit.
The two lessons compared
| Lesson | Starts at | Group size | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalapaki Beach, Kauai Beach Boys | 3610 Rice St, Lihue | Up to 6 | €92.32 | 4.8 from 37 reviews |
| Poipu Group Surfing Lesson, Hoku Water Sports | 2251 Poipu Rd, Koloa | Up to 4 | €82.99 | 5.0 from 4 reviews |
The Poipu lesson has few reviews so far, so treat its rating as a first impression rather than a track record.
Kalapaki Beach lesson
The page says you learn to paddle and balance on the board and master the basics, and that the surf inside Kalapaki Bay is protected. The listing includes the instructor, a surfboard and a rash guard. The page sets firm conditions: guests must be 10 or older, comfortable swimming in water well over their head, about 50 yards offshore, able to swim confidently without assistance in open ocean conditions and able to paddle a surfboard independently for about 1.5 hours. It lists children under 10 and people over 250 pounds (113 kg) as not suitable. If someone in your group needs extra assistance, the operator recommends booking a private lesson and contacting them first.
Poipu lesson
Check-in is at a poolside desk at the Ko’a Kea Resort in Poipu, followed by a safety briefing. You get booties, a long-sleeve rash guard and a soft-top board, then a land lesson of 15 to 20 minutes before you walk to the beginner surfing area. Storage for personal items, restrooms and outdoor showers are listed. Snacks and drinks, towels and gratuities appear in the same list without being marked as included or extra, so check the booking page; it asks you to bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen. The page excludes children under 8, people over 75 years, non-swimmers, pregnant women, wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments, anyone over 243 pounds (110 kg) and people prone to seasickness. Alcohol and drugs, and unaccompanied minors, are not allowed.
Which one should you book?
- Children aged 8 or 9: only the Poipu lesson accepts them, according to the pages. The Kalapaki lesson starts at 10.
- Heavier guests: the limits differ, 250 pounds at Kalapaki and 243 pounds at Poipu, so check yours against the page you book.
- Guests over 75: the Poipu page lists people over 75 as not suitable; the Kalapaki conditions are about swimming and paddling ability, so check those honestly.
- Swimming ability: both pages require it, and Kalapaki spells out the test, so be honest with yourself before you book.
- A bigger group of friends: Kalapaki takes six, Poipu four.
Both pages list free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. Surf conditions change, so a flexible morning is better than a tight schedule. For other water activities, see the snorkeling and diving comparison and the things to do on Kauai page.
Our recommendation
Book the Kalapaki Beach lesson if you are based on the east side and are 10 or older: it has 37 reviews, against 4 for the Poipu lesson. Book the Poipu lesson if you stay on the south shore or want a smaller group, as long as everyone is between 8 and 75.
