Food Tours and Cooking Classes on Kauai: What to Book
5 min read
For most visitors the answer is the Local Tastes Small-Group Food Tour: 140 reviews, 4.2 and €107.47, with far more reviews than the other food experiences on this page. It has one catch that decides the day: it changes location by weekday, and the page says all tours require you to drive your own vehicle and follow the guide from stop to stop.
The four options compared
| Experience | Duration | Group size | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local Tastes Small-Group Food Tour | 3 hours | Small group | €107.47 | 4.2 from 140 reviews |
| Hanalei Guided Food Walking Tour | 1.5 hours | Up to 15, private option | €140.71 | New, no rating yet |
| Local Dishes Cooking Class | 3 hours | Up to 12 | €154.96 | 5.0 from 5 reviews |
| Princeville Botanical Gardens and Chocolate Tour | 3 hours | Up to 6 | €111.32 | 5.0 from 6 reviews |
The weekday food tour
The page lists a different route for each day, so choose the day before the hotel:
- Monday and Tuesday: North Shore, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with local fruit, tea, grass-fed beef and fresh-caught fish.
- Wednesday: South Shore, 12:45 PM to 4:45 PM, with six tastings at upscale restaurants.
- Thursday: East Side, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, along the Royal Coconut Coast, with six tastings.
- Friday: Hanapepe Old Town, 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM, on foot with five tastings, ending at the start of Hanapepe’s weekly Friday Art Night.
- Saturday: Downtown Lihue, 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, starting at the Farm Bureau Farmers’ Market and including a brewery.
- Sunday: a Hanalei walking tour on the North Shore; its start time appears when you check availability for that date.
The page says every option requires some driving, including the walking tours in Hanapepe and Hanalei, so you need a car whichever day you pick. If you do not have one yet, you can compare rental cars for Kauai before you choose a day. Because guests drive their own vehicle and follow the guide, do not count on hotel pickup; the page’s list of inclusions mixes included and excluded items, so check on the booking page whether gratuities are covered. Arrive 15 minutes early and bring a passport or ID. Tell the operator about food allergies when you book, so the guide can warn each restaurant.
The Hanalei walking tour
This is the short option: 1.5 hours on foot in Hanalei, with signature dishes and desserts at local restaurants and a private option for your own group. The page lists a 20% gratuity to the restaurants and tips for your guide (cash preferred) without making clear which of them the price covers, so check this on the booking page; for special drinks you can bring your own or buy them along the walk. Photo ID is required for alcohol. It is new on the platform, so it has no rating yet.
The cooking class
The Local Dishes Cooking Class teaches four dishes: Spam Musubi, Somen Salad, Ahi Poke and Butter Mochi, in a plantation cottage on Kauai’s south shore; the meeting point is 3923 Koloa Rd in Koloa. You prepare the food yourself and eat a full meal at the end. The page excludes children under 10, people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
The chocolate and garden tour
The Princeville Botanical Gardens tour is a guided garden walk with seasonal fruit and honey samples, followed by a one-hour chocolate tasting. The route covers just over a mile with uneven terrain and steep inclines and stairs, and the page says it cannot take wheelchairs or walkers. Children under 5 may find it challenging. Free cancellation here is up to two days ahead, not 24 hours.
Our recommendation
Book the Local Tastes Small-Group Food Tour on the day that matches where you are staying. Pick the Hanalei walking tour if you are staying near Hanalei and want a short walk with tastings, and the cooking class if you want to make the dishes yourself.
